I research and write on the Soviet Union, post-Soviet space, modern Ukraine, Russian-Ukrainian relations, and the Russo-Ukrainian war. 

My first book, BY THE SECOND SPRING (forthcoming May 20, 2025 by Farrar, Straus, and Giroux), charts the paths of seven Ukrainians through Russia’s war on Ukraine.  (Reviews: Foreign Affairs, Kirkus Reviews (Starred), Library Journal (Starred), Harvard Magazine)

I completed my PhD in History at Harvard University. From 2023-2025 I was a fellow at the Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute. From 2025-2027 I will be a fellow at the Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia at the University of Michigan.
